DDD Group Plc (LON:DDD), the US based 3D consumer technology group, has licensed its TriDef 2D to 3D conversion technologies to a tier-1 semiconductor company for digital TV and Blu-ray system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions. The news sent shares in DDD up 5.2% to 20p during the morning. TriDef offers a comprehensive range of features for the needs of the emerging market for 3D consumer devices. The licensee is a member of DDD's Implementation Partner Licensing Program for TriDef 3D solutions and will work with DDD to integrate TriDef into its video processor SoC.

It is expected that the first 3D conversion chips will become available during the second quarter of 2011. DDD will receive royalties for the TriDef 2D to 3D conversion feature directly from the licensee's customers under separate license agreements. TriDef has already been included in more than a million 3D consumer devices worldwide and the new agreement is a response to the increasing demand for 3D televisions and playback devices.

Chris Yewdall, the chief executive of DDD, said: “The company licensing our market-leading TriDef technology is recognised worldwide for the quality and innovation of its digital TV and Blu-ray products. We are delighted to have been chosen and we look forward to further OEM design wins as the new chip is made available to its customers.”

Earlier in August, DDD reported that it had continued to benefit from strong demand for 3D systems and content during the half year to June 30. It said that trading had been in line with management expectations and that TV and PC licensees of its TriDef technology had shipped more than a million units during the period – up from less than 100,000 units shipped up to the end of 2009.
