- How come the site is responding sluggishly? Can you speed it up? This may be because you are using Internet Explorer as your browser. We have optimised the site for Firefox, Safari and Chrome and are working on Internet Explorer but there are a number of issues so it's taking time. In the interim, you may wish to try viewing the site in one of these other browsers as it will be faster that way.
- How do I set up a Virtual Fund on the site? Funds are distinct from Watchlists or Portfolio in being public rather than private. You can set up a Fund by clicking on http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/fund/start Once this is done, you will automatically entered into the Stockopedia Challenge (http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/fund/challenge).
- Why can't I edit my post once submitted? You are able to edit a post for up to 6 hours after it was first created but no later than that. This is to avoid "revisionism" of an argument/position. However, thread headers can be edited at any time because we will shortly be amending headers so that the history is stored and can be viewed by anyone viewing the header.
- How come I can't copy/paste an image into my post? If you want to paste an image into a post or thread header, this needs to be done as a link, as we are not able to host third party images on our servers for various reasons. The image will need to be hosted elsewhere using an online media hosting service like Tinypic.com, and you will need to click on the image icon in the editing toolbar and add the image URL link into the popup box. For security reasons, we extensively filter all HTML submitted through the text editor. The downside of this at the moment is that a lot of formatting power is lost, as things like sizing and positioning are attributes that we have to remove from posts. We plan to improve this as we'd like to allow certain image attributes through but this is still WIP.
- Why does some of the table formatting in posts disappear on submission of a post? As just mentioned, we extensively filter all HTML submitted through the text editor. The 'feedback' icon (right of screen) also is a cause of sluggishness.
When editing a wiki entry, is it possible to refer to a reference more than once in the text, and if so how?
E.G. one paragraph might say: "Acme manufacturers green widgets[1]..." a later paragraph might say: "the market for green widgets[1]"; where ref [1] is a document describing green widgets and their market.

Hi, at the moment, I don't think that there's no way to do that although we could certainly change that in due course. The temporary (but admittedly somewhat academic!) workaround would be to create a new reference using the [ref] [/ref[ tags, and then use "ibid" - http://www.encyclo.co.uk/define/ibid, but not perhaps ideal for this type of article, I appreciate.
This is an explanatory link re: the [ref] tags for those that haven't come across them yet - http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/help/encyclopedia-references. We are planning to add the same reference functionality for thread headers, in case people find it useful.

Hence, copying and pasting an image straight into the posting box will not work. The image will need to be hosted elsewhere, and you will need to click on the image icon in the editing toolbar and add the image URL link into the popup box. Please be aware also that, for security reasons, we extensively filter all HTML submitted through the text editor. The downside of this at the moment is that a lot of formatting power is lost, as things like sizing and positioning are attributes that we have to remove from posts. We plan to improve this as we'd like to allow certain image attributes through but this is WIP.
We will make this image insertion process clearer in the editor itself as it's clearly causing confusion for which apologies, but just FYI in the meantime.
Am I getting confused, or isn't this the practice commnly known as leeching or band width theft ? and won't it lead to S'pedia pages loading slower as well?

We just don't have the capacity to monitor image or other uploads given the risk from viruses or inappropriate content, so the options are either this or no images at all. Clearly, we would expect these images to be hosted by individual members, where they have the ability to do this (e.g. by using ImageShack, Photobucket or other free or cheap online media hosting services).

I think db makes a good point (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_linking#Controversial_uses_of_inline_linking ), however, I observe that this practice of embedding images that are hosted on a dedicated image hosting site is widespread, for example on ADVFN. In the fullness of time, I would like to see S'pedia include a file-hosting capability. Is there perhaps a peer-to-peer file hosting mechanism you consider - maybe that would reduce legal risks to S'pedia too?
Concerning performance, using images hosted elsewhere shouldn't have a negative impact on performance. Remember that S'pedia's servers are merely serving up HTML and the rendering (including image retrieval) is done by the user's browser, irrespective of where the image is hosted..
