The Stockopedia Guide to Value Investing

Value Investing is as old as the hills. Ever since biblical times buyers have been trying to hunt down bargains in the hope of selling them for a profit later, and a few thousand years of history can't change that basic arithmetic. But over the last few hundred years of stock market history, value investing has developed into both an art and a science and its most dedicated practitioners have become some of the wealthiest men in the world.

The original guru of bargain investing was Benjamin Graham who wrote prolifically about methods of valuing companies and buying bargain stocks. He tutored Warren Buffett who eventually found that Graham's methods led to owning very poor quality stocks leading him to label the practice 'cigar butt investing'. Gradually Buffett started looking to buy higher quality businesses at fair rather than bargain prices which contributed greatly to his extraordinary wealth.

Value investing is a very broad banner which ranges from simple bargain strategies to more complicated asset valuations and discounted cashflows. This collection of articles from Stockopedia and our contributors will help investors greatly with their understanding of the subject.

Warren Buffett put the point succinctly in his letter to shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway Inc back in 2000:  Market commentators and…
